For my children
As long as I live, there will exist the memories of you before you encountered cruelty, disappointment, or any unhappiness more serious than colic, temporary hunger, or an unchanged diaper
I will remember you before you ever disappointed yourself or anyone else. I will remember you before you said an unkind word.
I will remember you when you believed that anything was possible, when you had never done an unkind thing, when you believed in the possibility of dragons and magic and the goodness of people.
I will remember you when you showed me the first rainbow worth seeing, the first autumn worth living, the first snow worth walking on, the first sunset worth seeing, the first swing set worth playing on.
I will remember you when you thought I was the most wonderful person in the entire world. I will remember you when you believed I magically knew everything there was to know.
I will remember you when you believed I could keep you safe.
I will remember you at your purest. I will remember the essential you.
When you have forgotten, I will still know who you really are.
